Kingsley Moghalu is a member of faculty at the GOTNI Leadership Centre. Kingsley Moghalu is the President of Sogato Strategies LLC, a global strategy and risk management advisory firm in Washington, DC, and was a presidential candidate in Nigeria’s general elections in 2019. He is a Distinguished Senior Fellow at the Council on Emerging Markets Enterprises at The Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University in Massachusetts, USA, where he was on the full-time faculty as Professor of Practice in International Business and Public Policy. He is also a member of the Advisory Council of the Official Monetary and Financial Institutions Forum (OMFIF), an independent think tank for central banking, economic policy, and public investment with headquarters in London.
Dr. Moghalu served from 2009-2014 as Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, appointed by President Umaru Yar’Adua and confirmed by the Senate. As Head of the Financial System Stability directorate he supervised a banking system with $20 billion in assets, 24 banks with 57 subsidiaries in 31 countries, and led the implementation of extensive reforms that stabilized the Nigerian banking sector after the global financial crisis, ensuring that no bank failed and that no depositor lost a kobo. As Deputy Governor for Operations he led the modernization of the country’s payment systems including the introduction of the unique-identifier Bank Verification Number (BVN). He also supervised the Bank’s development finance role.
He previously held high-level appointments in the United Nations, including as a member of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Intergovernmental Expert Group on Financing for Development, and as a member of the Redesign Panel on the United Nations Internal Justice System that overhauled the accountability and transparency framework of the United Nations as a core part of UN management reform, at the level of Under-Secretary-General. He also had a staff career of nearly 17 years in the UN system, serving in strategic planning, legal and external affairs roles at duty stations in New York, Cambodia, Croatia, Tanzania/Rwanda, and in Switzerland, rising to the highest career rank of Director.
Kingsley Moghalu was educated at the London School of Economics and Political Science, where he obtained a doctorate degree in international relations, The Fletcher School at Tufts University, the Faculty of Law of the University of Nigeria, Nsukka, and the Institute of Risk Management in London, UK. He received executive education at Harvard Business School, Harvard Kennedy School of Government, and the International Monetary Fund (IMF) Institute.
He is the author of several books including Emerging Africa: How the Global Economy’s Last Frontier Can Prosper and Matter and Build, Innovate and Grow (BIG). His opinion commentary has appeared frequently in the Financial Times, Washington Post, International Herald Tribune, and USA Today, and he has been a frequent gust commentator on global political economy and development on CNN TV, BBC World TV, Bloomberg TV, and other global media. Kingsley Moghalu is a distinguished international keynote speaker at global industry and professional forums, and has guest-lectured at universities including Harvard, Oxford, Johns Hopkins, and London School of Economics.
