Dr Ismail Iro
Dr Ismail Iro is a member of faculty at the GOTNI Leadership Centre Dr. Ismail Iro has built a career spanning over 30 years in information systems. He specializes in Geographic Information Systems (GIS), Management Information Systems (MIS), Object-Oriented Programming (OOP), Research and Data Analysis. Dr. Iro began his career as a Teaching Assistant in 1984 in the School of Architecture and Planning, Howard University, Washington, D.C. where he assisted in running computer course (Information Processing Technique).
Upon his return to Nigeria in with a Master in City Planning degree, Dr. Iro taught at both graduate and undergraduate level in the Department of Geography, Bayero University, Kano.
Present Dr. Iro is an international IT consultant based in Maryland, U.S.A., developing geospatial technology and computerization for municipal and federal governments. In addition, he is engaged in area-wide research involving large scale data collection and analysis.
Dr. Iro also under took the following in Nigeria. 1. Chairman Implementation Committee for the Establishment of Ibrahim Shehu Shema ICT and Business Institute, Katsina. 2. Consultant to the Committee set up to Assess and Determine Arrears Accruable on Month-to-Month basis to State, Local Government Councils and State Universal Basic Education Board (Subeb) Employees in Katsina State from April 2011 To April 2012. 3. Member of the Committee set up by Katsina State Government for The Conduct of Pensioners Audit, Verification and Bio-Metric Capture Exercise (November 2012) 4. Chairman, Katsina State Community and Social Development Project: Community And Social Development Baseline Survey Of Prospective Participating Communities (December 2011).
Dr. Iro was engaged in the establishment of the Abuja Geographic Information Systems (AGIS). He was the Project Manager and later the first General Manager of AGIS.
Dr. Iro was the consultant for the computerization of Kaduna Millennium City under Kaduna Geographic Information Systems (KGIS). He was also the Contractor for the Revalidation of Mining Titles, responsible for initial computerization of mining cadastre as part of the Sustainable Management of Mineral Resources in Nigeria for the Ministry of Solid Mineral Development.
With over 20 years of working experience in the United States, Dr. Iro was a pioneer in Bi-County Digital Mapping using GIS in the State of Maryland. He had worked with leading ICT firms including Data Manager for Washington, D.C Comprehensive Child Development Program (CCDP), a 5-year research and demonstration project under the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), He was the Implementation Teams Leader for the Head Start Family Information System (HSFIS), the largest federally owned case management information systems for Early Head Start, Head Start, and Migrant Head Start.
He taught quantitative technique and technique of land administration in the two-year master’s program in Land Administration in the Department of Geography. Taught population geography, map reading and airphoto interpretation, and systematic geography of Nigeria at undergraduate level. Bayero University Consultancy Services.
He was the Team Leader statewide survey on resettlement of nomadic Fulani in Katsina State.
Dr. Iro holds the following: B.Sc. Geography from Bayero University, Kano ; Master in City Planning (MCP) from Howard University, Washington, D.C; Doctor of Philosophy from Howard University, Washington, D.C..
In addition, Dr. Iro has obtained many international academic and professional awards and certificates. He has a keen interest in news and current affairs and has created the first full-pledge Nigeria news website (www.gamji.com) which he manages till today. He is the first to put Nigerian newspapers like Daily Trust, Leadership, New Nigerian, The Triumph, and Hotline on the world wide web. He also publishes scholarly papers and articles. He is also interested in youth intellectual growth and development.
